A Horrible Virus

Write a story based on this line : "By evening, she was running a high fever ..."

Far away from the Hong Kong busy city central, there is a two-storey house on an island called Peng Chau. Once it was occupied by a family of three which cannot afford the ridiculous rental price of the downtown. They live on the upper floor and they set up the ground floor as a fast food shop. They usually sell fish balls, fried chicken wings and instant noodles for the passerby in order to earn their living.

Recently their business is booming because the number of hikers has increased. Tom and May, the couple, are very busy in preparing the food while their 12-year-old daughter, Janet, helps to deliver the food to their customers. Then, one day, Janet woke up from bed with a strange ache in her bones. Putting it down to overwork, Tom shooed her to bed and made sure she rested. Tom comforted her, 'Relax, daughter. You are overdoing things. We can handle the work by ourselves. '

However Janet seemed to be getting worse instead of recovering. By evening, she was running a high fever and in greater pain. Also she was coughing non-stop. She had almost all the symptoms of the Coronavirus. Tom and May were anxious. They managed to take Janet to the hospital. Dark in the night, they rushed to the town by the last ferry. After a long ride, they arrived at a hospital in Hong Kong Island. Before long, the doctor announced that she tested positive for  Coronavirus. A sense of  anxiety crept up to her parents' head and panic rushed through their veins.

Not long after, the paramedics who were dressed in protective clothing made Janet feel like she was an alien under scrutiny. She felt awkward and embarrassed. Soon, she was taken to a ward which on a floor that had been cleared of other patients. Tom and May were placed in rooms near hers. They were only allowed to speak to one another on the phone but were prohibited from meeting face to face.

Janet was terrified as she lay on the bed feeling weaker and weaker as the days went by. She was put on a ventilator as she could hardly breathe. The only people she came into contact with were the nurses and doctors who always wore protective clothing. After two weeks, Janet began to feel slightly better. Her condition improved daily and she was finally able to walk about in the room. Having passed the incubation period, her parents were allowed to leave the hospital first as it was certain that they had not caught the virus from Janet.

Janet took her first breath of fresh air two months after she was admitted to hospital. The experience had made the family realise how fragile life was and how significant the health was.
